Embeth Jean Davidtz was born on January 1, 1966 in Trenton, New Jersey, but grew up in South Africa. Fluent in English and Afrikaans, she studied classical and contemporary drama at the University of Rhodesia. As an actress, Embeth Davidz debuted in the National Theatre with the role of Juliet in the production of Romeo and Juliet and soon achieved recognition. In 1988, she made her first appearance on South African television in the film Private Life. In 1991, Embet Davidz settled in Los Angeles, began to star in various television films and miniseries, in the movies, playing in Sam Raimi’s “Army of Darkness” (1993) and in Steven Spielberg’s drama “Schindler’s List” (1993). Critics praised her work in Feast of July (1995). The next year she starred in the comedy “Matilda”, directed by Danny DeVito based on the book by Roald Dahl, then followed by the political drama “The Garden of Atonement”. In 1997, Embet Davidz played alongside Kenneth Branagh in Robet Altman’s Lesh, an adaptation of John Grisham’s novel. In 1999, Chris Columbus’ science fiction film Bicentennial Man was released, where Robin Williams and Sam Neill starred with Davidz.
