Robert was raised by single father Joseph Carlyle, his mother left the boy in the care of his father, a former decorator. The father, in order to feed his son, joined the hippie commune, moving with her from city to city. But, despite the hardships of life, Robert recalls that time with warmth and speaks with trepidation about his father, who had an innate artistry, was a wonderful storyteller and was able to masterfully “process” potential customers.
In his childhood, Robert was practically deprived of the opportunity to watch television, which was well compensated for the stormy fantasies of a teenager.
At the age of 16, he was forced to drop out of school and start helping his father design windows, which gradually led to the fact that he became a “difficult teenager”, but the death of a friend made him think that there was nowhere to go. At 21, Robert entered the acting studio at the Glasgow Arts Centre. For the next 15 years, Robert worked on the stage, replaying a huge number of different characters.
In 1991, he was offered the role of a construction clerk in the production film Riff Raff. The tape was well received, collected a lot of awards and made the directors pay attention to Robert.
