He was born and raised in Cape Town, South Africa. In 1968 he moved to England, where he studied at the Webber-Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art from 1969 to 1971. Beginning in 1975, he played in the gay theater company Gay Sweatshop, and in 1982 he became an actor of the Royal Shakespeare Company, in which he plays to this day. Winner of many theatrical awards (including two Laurence Olivier Awards), Anthony Sher is considered one of the most famous theater actors in the UK. He made his film debut, starring in episodic roles in the films “Yankees” (directed by John Schlesinger, 1979) and “Superman II” (directed by Richard Lester, 1980). Among the most famous cinematic works of Anthony Sher are the paintings Shady (1985), The Book of the Young Poisoner (1995), Terry Jones' films Eric Viking (1989) and The Wind in the Willows (1996), and his most popular roles were Benjamin Disraeli and Dr. Moth in the historical dramas of John Madden Her Majesty Mrs. Brown (1997) and Shakespeare in Love (1998). Author of several books - novels, autobiography, collection of drawings and paintings. In August 2000, for merits in the field of art, he was awarded the title of nobility (produced into the knights of the British Empire).
