People's Artist of Russia. Laureate of the RSFSR State Prize.
She was born on 27 December 1928. Her real name and surname is Emilia Bierman. Graduated from the acting faculty of the Leningrad Theatre Institute (1951, a student of B.V.Zon). In 1953-62 - artist of the Leningrad Drama Theater named after V.F. Komissarzhevskaya, since 1962 - Leningrad Bolshoi Drama Theater (BDT). The most striking roles on the stage of BDT: Irina in the “Three Sisters”, Tatiana in the legendary “Michelians”, Madeleine Bejard in “Moliere”, Vera Sergeevna in “Energy People”. Nature has endowed the actress with great talent, a temperament of rare strength, amazing beauty and a fragile soul. In her work there was no specific actor's theme. Emma Popova is a soul: trembling, suffering, vulnerable. She played, incinerating herself, leaving a piece of her heart on stage.
I taught at LGITMIK. From an interview with her student Vladimir Litvinov: Not so long ago an article by Sergei Yursky about Emilia Anatolyevna was published, in which he calls her nothing but Emotia Anatolyevna. Yursky wrote that Popova was the only partner with whom he felt not just a clear professional presentation of the image, not just a game of certain feelings. He felt that she was radiating Spirit. Theatre was her religion. As a teacher, she gave much more than others, although she left us in the third year, unable to work according to the pedagogical template of the theater institute. She hated imaginary objects. He said, “Children, let’s play!” She screamed frantically as the man went to rehearsal in a sluggish state: 'You, what?! Do you want to drink water?!
In the movie Emma Popova starred little. Among the films with her participation: “Storm”, “Train of Mercy”, “On One Planet”, etc.
The husband of the actress was the poet and playwright Alexander Gladkov (1912-1976), the author of the play Long Time Ago (on it Eldar Ryazanov staged the comedy “Hussar Ballad”.
She died on November 3, 2001 in St. Petersburg, in the House of Stage Veterans.
