Alexander is the elder brother of Mikhail – a poet, philologist and translator. Michael was a student of the sculptural department of the Higher Art and Technical Institute. He graduated in 1925 with a degree in sculptor and translator. For two years until 1930 he worked as a researcher on film at the Institute of methods of extracurricular work. In 1931 he began working for Sovkino. He also worked as artistic director of the State Directorate for Film Production, director of the Theatre-Studio of a Film Actor, head of the acting and directorial workshop of VGIK. The students of Mikhail Romm were such directors as Vasily Shukshin, Andrei Tarkovsky, Sergei Solovyov, Grigory Chukhrai, Nikita Mikhalkov, Alexander Mitta and many others.
