Robert Louis Stevenson is a great Scottish writer and poet, author of world-famous adventure novels and novels, one of the brightest representatives of English neo-romanticism. Robert Louis Stevenson is a great Scottish writer and poet, author of world-famous adventure novels and novels, one of the brightest representatives of English neo-romanticism.
Stevenson was born on November 13, 1850 in Edinburgh, in the family of an engineer. The boy studied at the Edinburgh Academy and in 1875 graduated from the law faculty of the University of Edinburgh. From an early age, Robert traveled a lot and was seriously interested in literature.
His first book, The Pentland Uprising, was published in 1866, but he was especially famous for his inimitable novel Treasure Island. Along with Treasure Island, Stevenson’s psychological novel The Strange Story of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is widely known. It was followed by the famous and no less interesting: “Prince Otto”, “The Kidnapped”, “Black Arrow”, “The Owner of Ballantre”, “St. Yves” and others. These works are characterized by adventurous plots and deep psychological character of the characters.
Stevenson is also the author of several collections of short stories. For example, such as: “New Arab Nights”, “New Arabian Nights Again”, “Merry Guys and Other Stories” “Evening Conversations on the Island”.
Robert tried himself not only in prose, but also in poetry. In 1885 he published the collection “Children’s Flower Book of Poems”, in 1890 “Ballads”. In Russia, the ballad “Bird Honey” is especially popular in translation by S. Marshak.
Many of Stevenson’s works were translated into Russian by such writers as: K. Balmont, V. Bryusov, I. Kashkin, K. Chukovsky and others. Leonid Borisov wrote about Robert Stevenson novel “Under the flag of Catriona”.
The talented and great writer died on December 3, 1894 from a stroke. It happened on the island of Upolu in Samoa. /
