The way home for Aleksandr Rekhviashvili is not charted in the conventional sense. It takes the viewer along some peculiar roads and across a unique landscape: Georgian history and legend, politics and social stratification, religion and ethics. Allusive, stylized and allegorical from beginning to end, his long-banned The Way Home is in part a tribute to Rekhviashvili’s favorite director, Pasolini, especially to The Hawks and the Sparrows (1966). Together with the short film Nutsa (1971) and the widely acclaimed Georgian Chronicle of the 19th Century (1979; SFIFF 1983), The Way Home closes a triptych of films that represent Rekhviashvili’s poetic contemplation of Georgia’s past. It makes extensive use of poems by Bella Akhmadulina (the major female poet of the cultural ‘thaw’ of the ’50s and ’60s and a Georgian by descent), and of sets by Amir Kakabadze. Like other films in the trilogy, The Way Home is stunningly photographed in black-and-white.--Oxymoron close

When old auntie Mirta succeeds in a lottery and wins a car, which she cannot use herself, different family members are suddenly there to 'be helpful' in favor to get the car after aunties' death, not to mention, they never have come before to help her. The funny rivalry between two parts of family, a foolish jealousy to the near living peasants' family, which had always non-selfishly been there for auntie, is a caricature of greasy human nature. This is a slight humor of the Soviet life details as well. But aunt Mirta isn't fool, and is still young in her heart until her last minute, that appears in her last will - to whom the car, the limousine in the color of St. John's night goes. close

It was a private hike in the mountains. Ordinary tourists, unprepared for the difficult trials that may lurk in the mountains, set off from the mountainous southern tourist base along a well-studied route, along which tens of thousands of people have already passed for many years. And none of the members of that group paid much attention to the alarming storm warning.
When a snowstorm suddenly hit the tourists on the mountain pass, the situation began to quickly get out of control. Caught by bad weather by surprise, people were trapped - a strong wind fell from their feet, white haze covered everything around, prickly snow blinded their eyes. It was impossible to return back, to go forward – there was not enough strength, there was nowhere to hide. There was a panic. In the most difficult situation in which the heroes of the film “Storm Warning” found themselves, as in no other, the best and worst qualities of those who went on that ill-fated campaign were manifested. A trek that has become a test of resilience and courage, a journey in which everyone has made their own moral choices.
The film “Storm Warning” is based on real events – the tragedy on the tourist route near Mount Fisht, which occurred in September 1975, when 21 tourists from a group of 53 people died. This dramatic story became the basis for the essay “Tornado” Arkady Waxberg Later, in a slightly modified version, based on the script of this film. close
