A new doctor from Moscow arrives at a provincial mental institution. His interest is the peculiarities of the psyche of a patient who believes that he is Yakov Yurovsky, the man who assassinated the last Russian tsar. In the course of their conversations it transpires that the patient is a kind of philosopher, not without a gift for suggestion. In a while the doctor himself falls under his patient’s influence: he tends to relive that fatal night of June 16-17, 1918 when, without any investigation or trial, Tsar Nicholas II, who had recently abdicated, was murdered, together with his wife, daughters and incurably ill heir. Soon the doctor realizes that the tragedy of the last Russian tsar is in part his own tragedy, too... close

The significant film Socrates (USSR) was shot in 1991 by director V. Sokolov. The events in the picture unfold in ancient Greece, from 404 to 399 BC. The grueling Peloponnesian War leads Athens to decline. The victorious Sparta puts a special garrison in the city and subordinates everyone to its orders. The established life of the Athenians is being reshaped by the invaders in a different way, and we are not talking about any democracy.
Traffic
The power belongs to the oligarchs, the main one of whom is the harsh Critias (B. Klyuev). Oligarchy means tyranny to the Greeks, confusion and fear in society. And in this outcome people blame Socrates (the role of G. Aredakov). He is a former teacher of the cruel Critias, and Lycon (A. Galko) demands that the philosopher be held accountable. But Critias also has a reason to deal with his teacher, and only the patronage of the supreme leader of Sparta Pausanias (actor G. Drozd) prevents this.
When the enemy leaves, Likon finds allies to fight Socrates - personal scores with him want to settle the talentless poet Melet (G. Vorobyov) and greedy leather magnate Anit (V. Stepanov). Out of revenge for an insulting assessment of his poetic abilities, Melet accuses the great Athenian of blasphemy and demands that he be executed for “corrupting the mind.”
Truth is more expensive
The evils of the philosopher’s teachings to society are proved by the fact that his disciples Critias, Harmid, and Alcibiades are guilty of the situation of Athens. Socrates "dismisses" the charges, but the majority votes for a severe sentence to the ruler of the Duma. The author of the statement that “a man above the crowd” is offered to repent and renounce seditious words. Then he can avoid death by asking the Athenians for forgiveness or exile.
But in the most difficult times for the country, Socrates does not consider himself entitled to trade in truth. Even if the price of a deal with conscience is his life. He obeys the court decision and accepts death with the pride of the hero.
The film “Socrates” was filmed by the creative and production association “Soyuztelfilm” in alliance with the film companies “Petropol” and “Lenfilm” in a watershed for the country in 1991, as it seemed, on the topic of the day. But even after decades, this picture remains relevant, as well as the events of centuries ago described in it. close

Inspired by Flaubert’s Madame Bovary, Sokurov’s Save and Protect recalls the most crucial events of Emma’s decline and fall: affairs with the aristocratic Rodolphe and the student Leon, the humiliation that follows her husband’s botching of the operation on the stable boy’s clubfoot. The universality of the theme of eternal struggle between the soul and the flesh is conveyed through the absence of specific reference to time or place: although the film seems to begin in 1840, its surreal mode effortlessly accommodates an automobile and the strains of “When the Saints Go Marching In” on an off-screen radio. Focusing on passion from a woman’s perspective and downplaying plot, Sokurov explores his subject in exquisite detail, capturing not only the heat of passion but also the quiet moments before and after and the innocent sensuousness of the body. close

The bureaucratic epos on the dialogues and plots of Mikhail Saltykov-Shchedrin "The History of a Town". In a metaphorical and grotesque form, the film conveys the history of Russia from the calling of the Varangians until the end of the 20th century. The film traces the change of the “chiefs” of the county town of Glupov, which differ in varying degrees of tyranny and the corresponding total number of “killed” city residents. The heads of the city easily guess the former heads of the Russian state and the USSR. close

The social ferment in late 19th century Russia which led to the 1917 Russian Revolution is movingly portrayed in this lengthy historical drama, which is very faithful to the 1907 novel The Mother by the celebrated Marxist writer Maxim Gorky (1868-1936). In the story, "the mother" (Inna Tchourikova) has no other recourse than to watch her decent, kindly husband turn into an animalistic, drunken brute as a result of working in the inhuman conditions of a steel mill in the town of Sormovo. When he begins to express his suppressed rage by beating her, she is defended by her teenaged son Pavel (depicted Viktor Rakov as an adult, Sacha Chichonok as a boy). After his father's death, Pavel is forced to go to work in the same factory. However, Pavel and his friends begin investigating Marxism and socialist thought, and work to organize their fellow workers. close
