... At the beginning of the last century, a man came out of the service entrance of the Moscow Art Theatre, walked through the streets of Moscow, and Muscovites looked after him. It was Kachalov, and among those who often watched the walk of the great artist was a little boy. His name was Pavel Massalski. Years passed, Pavel became a young man and came to the Moscow Art Theater Studio school to study acting, and then became an actor of the Moscow Art Theater. He had a beautiful baritone, and Nemirovich-Danchenko at one of the rehearsals of the play “Woe from Wit”, where both Kachalov and Massalsky were engaged, once said that he did not even know which of them had a better voice. But that was later. And after graduating from school-studio, Massalsky was accepted into the theater as an employee. An employee of the theater was something between an actor and a fake. He could play a wordless role in the extras, and could just portray the noise behind the scenes. The formation of the actor is a long way, and only after 9 years to Massalsky came a real success.
In the legendary for the Moscow Art Theater and theatrical Moscow play "Notes of the Pickwick Club" Massalsky played a swindler Jingle. The performance was a great success and one evening Grigory Alexandrov came backstage to the actors, who shot at that time the film “Circus”, and offered Massalsky the role of Kneishitz. The actor performed this role brilliantly and, playing through the negative villain, completely eclipsed the positive characters. “You will never play a positive role again,” said Alexandrov. Actually, that's what happened. Most of the heroes of Massalsky are rascals, scoundrels, scoundrels. How charming they were!
In the movie Massalsky starred little, except for “Circus” he still played in
movie "Ivan the Terrible" Eisenstein. And in the theater, one of his best roles was the role of Charles in the School of Backbiting. Massalski was distinguished by a special aristocracy, and the roles of English lords were especially successful. However, Vronsky’s officer uniform in the play “Anna Karenina” also sat on it perfectly.
Massalsky taught at the school-studio of the Moscow Art Theater. Among his students are Oleg Evremov, Tatiana Doronina, Oleg Basilashvili, Vladimir Vysotsky. /
