Since director Sergei Yutkevich was a longtime lover of American slapstick, his first films were imbued with a playfulness and cheeriness not typical of Russian cinema. Betrayal
In the center of the film is a rather tragic moment. We are talking about the funeral of the next Soviet General Secretary Konstantin Chernenko. Literary editor Sergei Eremin, who once betrayed his friend writer Sergei Starikov, decides to publish his novel. But here's the problem: the manuscript disappeared without a trace. And in order to get it again, you need to meet with the author.
Drunk
The film appeared before the audience as a social drama, which tells the story of two friends who have been friends for many years. But their close relationship is interrupted by the betrayal of one of their comrades, Sergei Aleksandrovich Eremin. He is a member of one of the local newspapers. They live in difficult times: everyone around them does nothing but praise the leaders, journalists cannot express their thoughts in the way they want. There is no freedom of speech or even of thought.
Sergey works in a department that is a kind of model of the surrounding society: young people want change, but those who are older are not at all against modern repression and the introduction of the most brutal framework. On the city streets, police officers walk, at each of the houses, literally near each entrance, agents of special services are on duty. Unfreedom and gloom...
Chance
After the death of General Secretary Konstantin Chernenko, mourning was declared throughout the Soviet Union, the streets were empty. It was at this time that Sergei Eremin decided on a frank publication. Previously, this manuscript of Sergei Starikov would never have been missed.
The manuscript has disappeared, so the editor has to look for meetings with an old friend. They split up as enemies because they both liked the same girl. But for the sake of publication, the prudent Eremin is ready to again seek rapprochement with a retired friend Starikov. . . close

Originally titled Vozvrachenia Vassilya Bortnikov, Vassili's Return was the last directorial effort by the great V.I. Pudovkin, who died in June of 1953. Like many of Pudovkin's later works, the film was diluted by interference from communist party officials; what remains, however, is well worth having, if miles removed from the brilliance of his earlier Mother, End of St. Petersburg and Storm over Asia. Based on a novel by G. Nikolayeva, the story centers upon a Russian named Vassili (Serge Lukynaov), who leaves his wife to do battle against the Germans in WW II. When Vassili is reported to have been killed in battle, his wife Avodtya (Natalya Medvedeva) marries another man. Per the film's title, Vassili returns, only to find his wife ostensibly out of his reach. Vassili and his former spouse eventually reunite as friends if not lovers, working side by side on a state-approved collective farm. close
