And Fyodor Ivanovich Chaliapin became his idol. In 1919, Cherkasov applied to the Military Medical Academy, but his soul was tormented by doubts. This summer, the young man entered the mimist studio, which was led by A. Clark. A few weeks later, Nicholas was enrolled as a mimist in the Petrograd Academic Opera and Ballet Theater.
In 1927, Nicholas graduated from the Institute, and in the same year he made his debut in the cinema – “Poet and Tsar”. The next role took place a year later in the same image. In 1929, the actor moved to the Leningrad Music Hall Theatre. In the summer of 1929, the actor met Nina Weitbrecht, a young actress. Soon they had a wedding, and in 1931 a daughter appeared in the family. In addition to working in the theater, the actor starred in silent films. In 1932, he played the role of a police officer in the first sound film “Meeting”. Since 1934, the actor began to work in the troupe of the Leningrad Academic Theater named after A.S. Pushkin. But it was the cinema that brought Cherkasov real fame. In 1934, he starred in the film Hot Days. A year later, there was a movie.

Thousands of fans accompanied Cherkasov on his last journey. And on July 27, 1970, one of the streets of Leningrad was named after him.
