The film "Gold" takes place during the Great Patriotic War. It all starts in a small town bordering Latvia. War is coming and the people are fleeing it. Senior cashier of the state bank Koretsky (Alexander Plotnikov) decides to stay in the city, he has been for many years, it is difficult for him to go somewhere in the unknown. A young typist, whom everyone calls “Repey”, Musya Volkova (Natalia Varley) was late for the last departing transport, and also forced to stay. The bank no longer works, but two fighters bring a bag of gold, 17kg. They found him in an exploded train, the bag fell out of the mail car. Koretsky and Musya understand that the gold belongs to the state and decide to give it to Moscow.

The Nazis are informed of the treasure, and they begin to search all the girls of the right age. The cashier and Musa must go deep into the forest to stay alive and save the cargo. However, sleeping in the forest is not easy, and autumn has already begun. Koretzky is getting sick from the cold. Musia leaves him in a haystack, and she sneaks into a village occupied by the Nazis, and asks the locals to get medicine for the cashier. Left in the forest Koretsky by then dies. Then Moses will have to go alone. She's careful hiding from everyone. Along the way, she sees the Germans gutting the suitcase and backpack of a young girl a bit like her. He meets in part the nurse Zoya, with whom he grew up in the same yard and with whom he has long been in love. During the first training flight on the "Seagull", lieutenant Streltsov shot down a German plane and received the nickname "Lucky." Russian filmmaker Mark Donskoi, of "The Gorky Trilogy" fame, was responsible for the postwar Soviet drama The Taras Family (originally Nepokorenniye, and also released as Unvanquished and Unconquered). A semi-sequel to Donskoi's Raduga (1944), the story is set in Nazi-occupied Kiev. The drama focusses on the travails of a typical Soviet family and on the efforts by the Germans to force the reopening of a local munitions factory. The film is at its most grimly effective in a long sequence wherein the Nazis conduct a search for Jewish escapees, culminating in a horribly graphic re-creation of the slaughter of the Jews at Babi Yar. While Donskoi was critically lambasted for his cinematic "sloppyiness" during this sequence (hand-held camera, rapid cuts etc.), it can now be seen that he was attempting a realistic, documentarylike interpretation of this infamous Nazi atrocity. close
